I hate Shakespeare. Throw me a Shakespeare quote and I’ll kill you. Though I respect his insanely genius mind in “Sophocles’ Oedipus Rex” or even his tragedy “Othello” . Only someone who is so comfortable with writing could have created those pieces and many more. But even that piece isn’t enough for me to love him.
And I thought about it.
Why do I hate Shakespeare?
Apart from the blatant obvious, I was forced to read them for literature classes at some stage in my life (2yrs in Sec school and ¾ a year for matriculation year). I don’t really have any other substantial reasons to hate him. I love reading, I can express myself well but when you put in a position where I have to read a book analyse it in and out and regurgitate it out on paper under an exam setting, I am running miles away from that book.
But I didn’t hate the other books I had to read. Like Endless Steppe, a Anne Frank kind of book that talked about war. I loved literature classes when I had to read that book. But Shakespeare made me mad!
Why?
I think it was because, he made love sound so mysterious and cool and hip and lovely when in actual fact it isn’t so. Who falls in love at first sight? And marries within a week? That was the main reason why I hated him. He makes love sound so simple when it isn’t. Will you die for love? Like Hell, I will NOT. You see, he’s way of thinking isn’t anything like mine.
Love according to science and rationale is a hormonal control thing based on the secretion of some proteins.
Before you think, I have gone insane and need to admit myself into a mental institute, No I don’t think the science rationale is the whole absolute truth, (though it is true technically).
I loved Animal Farm, but I think the reason why I loved it was because I was Molly the horse for a school play, I can only remember the book well until Molly dies, the rest is a blur to me.
Or the reason why I hate Shakespeare is because of his English. Beautifully written when you just have to read it for pleasure or watch in a play but when you need to study it, its painful because its so complex.
But even though I hate Shakespeare, he’s bloody clever. I have to admit that. If he lived now, he might have portrayed the story more to our context. (Did people really marry that fast back then?) Ingenious plots really truly ingenious, but I won’t touch his book now because 1) I don’t have to, 2) I don’t want to. Give me Hollywood movies based on his books instead. You know how some books are better reads than a movie? This guy’s books make far better movies than actual books for reading, well atleast for me.
His poems are even worse….
What in the world is he talking about? How can a flower be described it so many verses? A flower is a flower. Colourful, yes. Pretty yes. But that is all there is to a flower and yet he goes on and on and on and on………
At the end of my redundant rant about hating Shakespeare and yet finding him a genius, I must conclude, I think I only hate Shakespeare because of his writing style. It just is too much. BUT HE IS A GENIUS
PS: I have wasted about 30min typing this because my mind refused to take in anymore of DNA transcription.
